Lodge and Councils in Tasmania |
The Lodge and Councils that operate in Tasmania are under the jurisdiction of the Supreme Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Scotland and, as such, are part of the District Grand Royal Arch Chapter of Tasmania.
There are two separate and distinct parts in each Lodge and Council, hence the name. There are a Lodge of Royal Ark Mariners, and a Council of Red Cross Knights.
Until the early years of the 20th. century, both these orders were worked under the Royal Arch Charter. however, when the Cryptic Councils were regularized by the Supreme Grand Chapter in 1915, it was felt that the same should be done with the Royal Ark Mariners and Red Cross Knights. Hence the title "Lodge in Council".
The first Lodge in Council established in Tasmania was St. Andrew in Launceston in 1918.
The origins of the Ark Mariners Degree are obscure and various mentions are made of it from the 18t. century. As far as Scotland is concerned, is concerned, its first received mention in their records in 1844, but as far as stated above it was not regularized until 1915.
The Degree deals with Noah's flood and the moral lessons that can be drawn from it.
The Council of Red Cross Knights is a further extension of the building of the Temple of Jerusalem and the return of the captives from Babylon. Therefore, it compliments the Royal Arch Degree. The Degrees received in this section are Knight of the Sword, Knight of the East, and Knight of the East and West.
Entry into a Lodge in Council is available under the Scottish Constitution.
